Feb 22, 2026 Local Culture

Every summer since 1961, the Ohrid Summer Festival has been one of the most prestigious cultural events in Southeast Europe. Running from mid-July through mid-August, the festival brings together world-renowned musicians, theatre companies, ballet troupes, and opera performers in some of the most breathtaking venues imaginable.

The Ancient Theatre

The crown jewel of the festival is the Hellenistic amphitheatre, built in 200 BC and once used for gladiatorial games. Today, under the stars and overlooking Lake Ohrid, it hosts symphony orchestras, opera performances, and contemporary music concerts. The acoustics, shaped by 2,200 years of history, are remarkable.

Church Venues

Sacred music concerts take place in medieval churches including the Church of St. Sophia, whose 11th-century frescoes provide an awe-inspiring backdrop for classical music performances. The intimate scale of these venues creates an unusually close connection between performers and audience.

What to Expect

The festival program typically includes classical orchestral concerts, chamber music, jazz and world music performances, theatrical productions, ballet, contemporary dance, literary readings, and visual arts exhibitions. Past performers have included the London Philharmonic, Bolshoi Ballet dancers, and acclaimed international soloists.

Attending the Festival

Tickets are available through the festival's official website and at venue box offices. We recommend booking popular performances in advance, as the ancient theatre seats only 5,000. Hotel Nova Riviera's concierge can assist with ticket purchases and transportation to venues.

Stay at Nova Riviera

Hotel Nova Riviera is ideally located for festival-goers, with most venues within walking distance. After an evening of culture, return to your room overlooking Lake Ohrid and reflect on the magic of live performance in one of Europe's most ancient cities.
